The firing of a
Mata Ortiz or Casas Grandes
pot.
The pottery is fired the traditional open pit fire.
First the pot is pre heated in the sun or a few hot coals, then placed
under
a clay or metal pot to protect the piece from direct contact with the
flames. Covered using cow dung or cottonwood bark the efficient fire will
reach a temperature of about 1600 degrees Fahrenheit.
The firing duration lasts about a hour or so. |
