The forming of a
Mata Ortiz or Casas Grandes
pot.
In forming the pot, clay
is patted out creating a "tortilla"
and then pressed into a plaster or clay bowl. This gives
the traditional pottery a characteristic rounded bottom.
Hand-rolled coils of clay are added to this base,
pinching and smoothing as the pot takes form.
The only tool used besides the hand is a piece of hacksaw blade. |
